The Princess Bride fits the bill too, except it is a deliberate parody
of itself. It is soooo much better than the book it is based on. Definitively a much watch if just for cultural reasons.

Really? I read the book in college and couldn't put it down.

I think the story and the premise of the book are great. The book is a 97% accurate representation of them. I think it only skips the zoo part. However, I think the book was not well writen and while the footnotes and the fictitious remake theme were fun, the overall presentation was not that good. The novel is still a good read, but only because its strong points overcame this weak point.

Sincerely, I think the movie is great because it keeps all which made the book great while getting rid of the stylistic choices that took away from it. It is arare case of a high quality boot-to-movie adaptation, of the kind you rarely see.
